Garden gift ideas for Father's Day

While you could buy almost anything garden-related for a keen gardeners, if Dad's just an occasional gardener there are still plenty of garden gifts to choose from, from the practical to the unusual and unexpected.

Tools are a fairly traditional choice, but if Dad has already accumulated a variety of basic tools, what are your options? One might be a better quality versions of what he already has. Or, something a little unusual - how about a pole pruner for tall branches or fruit picking aid? A grafting kit might encourage him to have a go at grafting his own multi-variety fruit trees. Thinking bigger, a greenhouse or shadehouse might be appreciated, although smaller versions of these can be purchased if space or budget is limited.

If Dad is very practical, you might like to put together a selection of plant tonics, wetting agents, soluble fertilisers and so on, with some handy plant tags and marker pencils thrown in, presented in a useful garden tub, pot or planter. You could put together a great gift pack from the garden garden department of chain stores, if you can't make it to a garden centre.

If you want to give a plant that Dad's can enjoy for years to come, there are a huge variety of plants to choose, whether it's the garden, a balcony or indoors. Ask the staff at your local garden centre for help if you're not sure. If he thinks growing anything except food is a waste of space, (or just likes eating) an unusual fruit tree, herbs or heritage vegetable seeds may be appreciated.

Alternatively, delivery might be arranged through a reputable mail order company or local supplier who can deliver to your Father's area. But don't leave it until the last minute - be sure to allow for processing and delivery if you want it to arrive in time.

To compliment the plant you can accessorise with a decorative pot or other aids to help it grow (fertilizer, plant support). These items also make great gifts on their own, too, especially if she already has a collection of plants in unattractive pots and in need of
