Sansevieria

Dracanea species and cultivars formerly in Sansevieria genus

Common Names: Mother-in-law's tongue, snake plant, bowstring hemp
Synonyms: Sansevieria species
Family: Asparagaceae

The genus Sansevieria is now classified as part Dracaena based on genetic analysis, for gardeners represent a group that look quite different and we'll probably keep calling them sansevierias (at least informally) for a long time to come.

These succulents have are very drought tolerant and are well suited to modern landscapes. They are also popular for container growing, indoors as well as outdoors.

It should be possible to by quite a few types from regular garden outlets these days, but for the wider selection, seek out specialist indoor plant shops or collector shows.

Sansevierias were covered in more detail in the 16-12-2022 edition of Get Results Gardening, a weekly email publication for Australian gardeners, especially those in the tropical, subtropical and warm temperate parts of the country.
