The Tradescantia genus contains may species popular for gardens and as indoor or shadehouse plants, but being very fast growing and propagating from broken pieces, many have weedy tendencies. Some have previously been included in other genera including Rhoeo, Setcreasea.

Commelina and Zebrina are very similar and include plants popularly known as "wanfering Jew".
